Mini-Grants Announced!

In partnership with the 42nd Avenue Business Association, and with Support from Venture Portland and the Portland Development Commission, Our 42nd Avenue recently launched a mini-storefront improvement grant program for district businesses. The purpose of the grants is to make small, permanent improvements to support business prosperity and help achieve community goals. Businesses were invited to apply for grants of either $1-1,000 with no required matching funds, or $1,000-2,000 with a required match.

In total, seven projects were selected:

  • Dean’s Car Care, Alameda Metalworks & Steamboat Investors for landscaping, siding and trim repair, and new paint.
  • The Wilshire Tavern for repair and refurbishment of its neon sign.
  • Suds’n'Duds Laundry for a new sign and a small mural.
  • MeRae’s on 42nd Beauty Salon for new paint and signage.
  • Roses Ice Cream for an improved outdoor seating area.
  • Bob’s Rocket Pizza for an outdoor seating deck.
  • Wilshire Dental for window repair and new signage.

To support these improvements, the O42A Design Team has been working with business owners to help capture their visions for the future of their spaces. The Design Team will continue to work with district businesses in anticipation of the next grant cycle, which is planned for July of 2013.

Who is the Design Team?

We are a small team within a large group of people who are interested in Design, Architecture, Urban Design or a similar field. Anybody who is part of the community and has an interest in one of these field can be part of our meetings. Most of all we like to bring some design perspective to the street to make this corridor a more attractive and liveable place to be, live, work or play.

What does the Design Team do?

We help businesses to visualize how a new storefront can look like.
We help organize small and big events. Like the Community Design Fair and Street Fair Workshops.
We gather community input on design and future developments and communicate this voice to City Staff.
We think of small improvement and placemaking projects. Get funding and realize!

We organize a creative meeting every other week on Thursday evening.

How can I get involved?

Join our Thursday evening meetings. It will be an hour of brainstorming, discussion and/or workshop. Every time there will be a different topic or project. The goal is making the street a more attractive place to be, building relationships through design and most of all have fun working together with and for community members.

What is going on this Thursday?

We might think about a little placemaking project for the whole stretch and other exciting things that are going on. Would you like to be a part of the start of this design process? Lets collaborate!
New design folks will be attending the meeting. Ready to meet new people from your neighborhood?
Are you interested in what we’ve done so far? This Thursday we’ll show you many drawing and inspirational sketches for 42nd.
